A beautiful indigo color welcomes you to the mysteries of the Ajna chakra, meaning “to perceive or to command” in Sanskrit. This is the chakra that is connected to our intuition, clear vision and thought as well as the ability to see the inner and outer worlds of our existence. Indigo is the color of night. There is a feeling of awakening and change in this color that connects us to space and time.

This chakra is located on your forehead, between and slightly above your eyebrows. Many say that its location in our brain is where its power comes from, as the brain is seen as the place our soul resides, that part of us that is still connected to the spiritual plane of existence. 



Inner Clarity

This chakra assists us in heightened spiritual growth and inner clarity. The ability to be the “observer” of our own inner thoughts and the body’s reactions is incredibly helpful when we are trying to understand ourselves in a deeper way. Another quality that the newcomer might not associate with the third eye is imagination! But it does make sense when you stop and ponder that for a second. Where else does our ability to imagine come from, if not the brain? 



In Balance vs Blocked

When in balance, this energy wheel also helps you to develop positive attitudes and a more selfless and humanitarian attitude to life.   

When your third eye chakra is blocked or underactive, it can negatively affect your body in so many ways. Your ability to concentrate, process information, or keep cool under pressure can be severely hampered. Have you ever gotten lost when driving to a new destination and have had to stop to try and figure out where you are going? That is like trying to navigate life when your third eye chakra is blocked. You can lose your sense of direction in life and become stagnant. Your perception about life and where you’re headed can become a cloudy vision with no clear path ahead. That can be a scary place to be!  If the Ajna chakra stays closed for too long it can also result in an inability to let go of the past and a fear of what the future holds. 



Balancing Techniques

To bring this important chakra back into balance you can meditate with the mantra AUM (OM) which helps open and recharge this part of our vision. While AUM is one of the most common mantras and can be used for a wide variety of mantra meditations, it is particularly helpful for this chakra.

That’s because your life purpose is also deeply connected to this chakra and chanting OM will help shake loose the constraints that you have placed upon yourself by not listening to your inner wisdom to guide you on your path for a life that lights you up. 

There are several more methods for restoring your Ajna chakra to full health that are relatively easy to do.  

One is to get out in the sunlight a little more regularly. Because light awakens the pineal gland in your brain which is also connected to this chakra, sunlight can stimulate the chakra as well. 

Another is grounding yourself with mindfulness. Taking the time every day to notice the reality of what is happening around you and focusing on your breath can be incredibly helpful. If you tend to get lost in daydreams or fantasy too often, this can dim the perception and wisdom of the third eye.
